The Greenest Domains on Earth: A Look at Premium “Green” Dot Coms

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Green.com | For Sale | Registered in 1999greendotcom.png

The Green.com website currently resolves to a glorified “domain for sale” landing page which I believe is using some Jedi mind tricks.  Below the fold is a promotional blurb for the fabulous Entertainment.com coupon book.

GoGreen.com | Active | Registered in 1997

The ever popular catch phrase “Go Green” is currently owned by an organization based in Vancouver Canada that supports go green transportation initiatives.  Content is under review as the splash page says, but I genuinely did enjoy the “Seven Great Ways To Get Around” feature, nice retro clip-art!

GreenPlanet.com | Active | Registered in 2003

This beauty is owned by Green Planet Environmental Ltd, a non-profit organization based in Liverpool England. They make the planet green by developing sustainable products that work with nature for areas in most need such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Aboriginal Australia.

GreenEarth.com | Doomed | Registered in 1997

Currently a “Coming Soon” message.  A quick glance at Archive.org reveals that in all GreenEarth.com’s 12 years, it has never really been used, kinda sad!  Soon to be some form of marketplace for green products, we’ll see.

GreenMagazine.com | Active | Registered in 2001greendeere.png

The Green Magazine for none other than… John Deere tractor enthusiasts?  You guessed it!

GreenEnergy.com | Forwards | Registered in 1997

Forwards to TransAlta Wind’s Vision Quest Windelectric business channeling the power of wind into local power grids.

GreenMovement.com | Parked | Registered in 2005

Finally a domain that needs a home!  GreenMovement.com is currently parked.  A look at the whois shows that it is owned by somebody livin’ it up in the Grand Cayman Islands.  Hey Frank, is that you? )

GreenProducts.com | Active | Registered in 1997greenproducts.png

This Iowa based trucking company processes corn cobs into all kinds of great pet bedding and litter. The potential is lacking, technically this company isn’t “Green” in the since of environmental friendliness at all, rather it was founded by Clifford Green  in 1947.

GreenIdeas.com | Active | Registered in 1999

Personal blog of one Alibert Botogol of the United Kingdom.

GreenTechnology.com | Parked | Registered in 2001

Yet another parked green domain. I really like this one, anyone care to broker the sale, get a good deal for me!

Top Prices Paid for Green Domain Names

These are the highest reported sales for “Green” domains. Some listings have been removed that were not relevant.

GreenPackaging.com sold for $25,000 (Mar 2008)
GreenhouseGases.com sold for $21,975 (Dec 2007)
GreenVehicle.com sold for $15,000 (Feb 2008)
Greenster.com sold for $10,895 (Mar 2008)
GoGreenToday.com sold for $10,000 (Jul 2008)
GreenStyle.com sold for $10,000 (Mar 2008)
GreenTips.com sold for $6,288 (Jun 2008)

Sources: NameBio & DNSalePrices

After looking into all these green domains, I am surprised not to see more premium sales recorded. Hopefully that means there are still good deals to be done.

The real winners here are those who picked up green domains before the word went viral. However, it is still very possible and probably profitable to invest into the green domain niche.

I would really love to own a great “green” .COM domain name for a project I have in mind.  Feel free to contact me.

Do you have any Green Domains?

Other Cool Interactive Magazines

While I’m on the topic, I feel compelled to share this find.   I stumbled on to MagWerk’s quite awhile back (so the content might be a little outdated) but their digital interactive magazines are still very innovative.

MagWerk’s has published (virtually) a line of high quality web zines posing as real flip page magazines. Currently featuring a magazine on each of the following: Music, Gaming, Art & Design, Art & Fashion.

magwerks.jpg

These magazines are, in certain sections, very interactive and media rich with things such as sound clips and music while you read, animation, in-page link structures, pagination within pages , interactive graphics on mouse-over and click, live voting polls, embedded videos and who knows what else. Personally, I haven’t even read but a few pages from each magazine, so I assume there are much more surprises in the form of articles, reviews and more.

Enjoy these 4 high quality virtual magazines, we can only hope that all magazine publishers would someday try their hand and something as interactive and media rich as this!

Action.com Sells for $230,000 and a .CA Breaks Into the Top 10

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

A few quick updates before I lead you to the DNJournal sales report:

  • I’m back from a great family vacation in Texas and have a ton of work to catch up on, bear with me!
  • If anyone would like to get some great exposure for their business or blog, DotSauce is currently accepting guest post article submissions related to domain names and/or development.
  • My available domains newsletter subscribers received another list of high quality available domains last night, many of which have already been registered.

Action.com Sells for $230,000

The new weekly domain sales report is out at DNJournal. The top dog this week was a one-word .com domain that attracted close to a quarter of a million dollars in one of the year’s 20 biggest sales. We expanded our usual Top 20 chart to make way for another wave of completed live auction sales. .Com wound up claiming 23 of the 30 positions but the country codes fared well again, taking four spots on the all extension leader board. A Canadian three-letter ccTLD soared all the way to the #6 position. The top chart also sported a pair or .nets (one ranking #3 overall) and a .org. You can get all of the details at the DNJournal sales report.

~ Via Email from Ron Jackson

GMX.ca Sells for €20,000 ($31,200)

Position #6 on the DNJournal sales report is held for the first time by a .CA domain sale. GMX has something to do with language translation standards and is also a German email company, though I’m not sure why exactly this specific domain fetched such a high price. Nonetheless an impressive sale and great exposure for the Canadian ccTLD.

.ME Domains Open Registration Goes Live Today: Don’t miss out!

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

dot_me.gif

The much anticipated launch of the .ME domain is here.  Public registration for all .ME domains begins today!

Official opening time is 11AM EDT / 8AM PDT.

.ME Goes Live Today, Register Yours at GoDaddy!

GoDaddy.com announced in a press release in January that they won the bid to manage the new .ME ccTLD.

Over 30,000 .ME domains have been pre-registered and several thousand more have been reserved (full list) by doMEn to be auctioned off at a later date.

However, that is a small number of possibilities for words and phrases to work well with the .ME extension!

Get in Early for Some Great Name Opportunities

Make a list of names that you think would sound great with a .ME extension.  Think local or GEO names and personal services, blogs, videos, maps and apps.

Prices are expected to be $19.99/yr with a minimum 2 year registration. Though they could be lower at GoDaddy with discount coupon codes.

header_me_logo.gif

Insight into the Value of .ME

  • Will not be restricted, anyone in the world can claim one.
  • GoDaddy will use its marketing muscle to globally promote it.
  • Many languages contain the word “me” with various catchy meanings.
  • Huge branding potential for English speaking countries.
  • All registrars will be invited to resell the .ME extension.

Startup Weekend: Local Entreprenuers Meet Up and Start Up Businesses

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

July 11th 2008 6:00pm EST RTP Startup Weekend commences and the energy is lively in Raleigh, NC.  A diverse group of fifty-some developers, programmers, and designers are all entrepreneurs at heart.

CNBC is here filming the event and doing interviews, we have a live video feed, Flickr photo stream, and everyone is reporting live via Twitter.

After introductions and networking for an hour at the beautiful Edge Office building we got right down to business!  The floor was opened for business ideas and in a short time the group came up with 25 unique concepts.

iPhone applications seemed to draw some buzz from the crowd and several ideas were focused on developing practical applications to be used on your iPhone.

There were some other more innovative ideas as well.  One man had information on a  device for essentially translating foreign languages, a genuine babbefish.

I spoke with some video game developers who had previously created a science-fiction themed video game which was intended and accredited to teach Economics! They pitched an idea for a web based treasure hunt game with local sponsors and big prizes.

I hope to report back with more on our business developments as the weekend progresses.

Over 30,000 Pre-Registration Applications Received for .ME Domains

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

An astounding 30,000 applications were received to date for registering .ME domains!

It has been announced that the next round of registration, operating on a first come, first served basis, beginning on July 17, during which all areas would be assigned to the first bidders who meet the eligibility requirements.

The Sunrise Period began in May, when only trademark owners could have requested applications.  .ME domain names that receive more than one application will be awarded through an auction.  .ME domains should be used as a personalized Web address and catchy as a marketing tool for businesses throughout the world. .ME Landrush (pre-registration) began in early June, and the Open registration is scheduled on a first come, first-served basis in mid-July. Two years minimum is required at all. ME domain names registered during the first and Land Open a registration period.

The remaining .ME registration schedule is as follows:

June 26 to July 15: Quiet Period. Meanwhile, the registry is closed to registrars. The names for which there was only one request during the period Land is allocated. Land auctions begin for the names that have received multiple applications.

July 17: Open registration. Domain names are registered on a first come, first served basis.

Putting the Vanity Domain Extension Debate to Rest

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Ron Jackson, editor of DNJournal recently published the June edition of his newsletter featuring a great editorial about ICANN’s decision to allow “vanity” TLDs.  There is plenty of commentary from experts such as Michael Castello and Rick Schwartz debunking the idea that new domain extensions could spell disaster for the domain industry.

DotSauce has been hesitant to cover this news for the very reasons these experts describe below, that and the fact that it has spread across many many news sources, domaining releated and otherwise. This editorial should put to rest the debate and give you a clear understanding of what will go on in the near future.

Click on the image below for a copy of the June newsletter.

newsletter.jpg

Ron Jackson, Editor of DNJournal says…

“In a nutshell, past history has not been kind to new TLDs and I see little reason to believe that dumping a massive number of them on the market at once will be any more or less successful than ICANN’s previous strategy of releasing new extensions in a slow, deliberate manner.”

Michael Castello of CCIN says…

“The markets within markets of domain speculation are timing out and so many new extensions will only confuse the masses. Most domainers only talk to domainers and do not understand the logic on the street. Domainers are thinking way too much and in reality success in this business is very simple. Search engines will help with the clutter of these new vTLDs (’vanity’ TLDs, a term coined by Michael’s brother and CCIN partner, David Castello) but in the long run .com is the easy way for people to navigate.”

Rick Schwartz, co-founder of TRAFFIC says…

“This is the biggest nothing I have seen in quite some time. It won’t affect anything for 10 years and when it all kicks in, it will cost traffic to .com…ZIPPO. It may even increase it as folks become more aware of the browser bar and direct navigation.”
