After Late Start Rick Rolls Through Full Auction List

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Technical difficulties continued to plague the auctions in Australia this evening (afternoon in Australia). Rick Latona’s auction experienced similar audio/video issues that Aftermarket.com experienced earlier in the day at their TRAFFIC Down Under auction. When the audio and video feed came in, it was quite clear Latona was agitated by the over 1 hour delay.   He was heard saying before the event “Let’s go. We’ve got business to do.”  He managed to knock out the list of 69 names in around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The auction moved along smoothly after the late start and only had one minor hiccup between the bidding of ProBasketball.com and PsychicAdvisor.com.  It was hard to follow what exactly happened and we might not have this right. It seems that an onsite bidder was still wanting to bid on ProBasketball.com, which was displaying on the screen at the event,  but the auctioneer had already closed bidding and moved to another name.  That being the only minor problem in the technical side of things, the auction moved on smoothly.  Latona sold a total of 40 names, many coming in from the large pool of no reserve names he had included. The .com.au lots also attracted a lot of on-site bidding, as was the case in the earlier Aftermarket.com auction as well.  Latona netted a total of $413,640 in sales.  The top position went to SanJuan.com and CR.com tied with a top bid of $150,000 for both of these names.

(Yeah I said Rick Rolls in the title . . . clever eh? )

Aftermarket.com TDU Auction Starts Out Strong But Flops From Technical Difficulties

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Aftermarket.com got off to a late start early Thursday morning (Australian time) with their TRAFFIC Down Under auction. The start of the auction was delayed 20 minutes with technical problems with the audio and video feeds.

However, once the auction got going, it seemed like the auctioneer really was moving the names well.  Few names seemed to past, given the No reserve prices on many names. The activity really skyrocketed through camera.co.uk, which sold for $35,000 . Around the time lot 38 came up it was clear that their were technical difficulties as these auctions didn’t show as closed on the users side once the hammer fell.  By the time the auction reached lot 48, the Aftermarket.com team decided to pull down the auction and take a 5 minute recess. Word from the team on the ground was that they were having technical difficulties on their network back in Washington.

With the audio, turned way up on the still running video feed, DNN was able to pick up some of the conversation between the Aftermarket.com team members deciding whether to continue the already late auction and what to do with the little time they had left.  It sounded like the decision was made, with a major influence and push by TDU host Dan Warner, to continue bidding on .com.au names only.  The Aftermarket.com team opted to continue the auction and sell only the remaining .com.au domains at the live event and passed on selling the rest of the other domains. These names were receiving the most action from the live audience members and given the location it somewhat makes sense to cater to those in attendance. However, cutting off the remaining names surely didn’t win them any love from the sellers.  Saws.com and PrivateResort.com were also brought up in the end and both did sell.  Saws.com ended up closing at $52,000, making it the top sale for the day.

DNN was informed by Aftermarket.com staff that the other domains that did not make it before the live audience will be available and open for bidding until November 26th at Aftermarket.com  These problems will likely cause a huge amount of grumbling among the sellers whose names were affected by the problems.  The auctioneer did a great job and this auction looked to be a resounding success until the technical difficulties brought it crumbling down.

TRAFFIC Down Under Final Auction Lists Released

Monday, November 17th, 2008

The final lists have been published for the TRAFFIC Australia auctions being conducted by Rick Latona and Aftermarket.com. Latona’s list consists of 62 domains nearly half of which are listed as No Reserve. This follows closely in step with the Aftermarket.com list which has 100 domains half of which are listed at No Reserve as well.  Both lists contain keyword rich generics form the .com.au space as well.

The auctions take place on Thursday in Australia which will be Wednesday, November 19th at 5:30pm and 9pm in the Eastern US. Check the TDU site out for more information.  Online bidding is now open for both events. Aftermarket.com can be accessed here and Rick Latona’s auction is available here.

Both sites require registration. Since the auction is being held on the other side of the planet and time zones vary it may be wise to make your bids early. By the looks of it, both the Aftermarket.com and Rick Latona auctions have already attracted bidding activity with a handful of domains already receiving bids.

Sedo to Host First Ever Numeric Domain Auction

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Sedo has announced plans to host the inaugural numeric domain auction from November 27 at 1pm until December 4 at 1pm EST.

The numeric-themed auction will be hosted online at Sedo.com and will feature premier numeric domains including 88.com, 40.com, 13.net, and 70.com. There will also be less generic domain names including popular zip codes, area codes, and other valuable numbers.

“Numbers are the language of science and carry a lot of secondary meanings in cultures around the world - certain pairs are often associated with luck and prosperity, for example,” explained Jeremiah Johnston, the Chief Operating Officer of Sedo. “These factors make short, two-digit domain names valuable in any market.”

Sedo is still accepting domains for this event and will consider submissions meet the following criteria:

  • two-to-three numbers long with a .com or .net extension
  • four-numbers long with appeal (such as 1111.com, 6789.com, or 2010.com)
  • five numbers long with a .com and relevant appeal (such as a zip code)

You can contact Matthew Rosebrook, a Sedo broker, for more information at Matt.Rosebrook [at] sedo.com or submit your domains directly through your Sedo account.

NameJet Auction Blunders Cause “Re-do”

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

NameJet.com announced in an email to customers tonight that several auctions that occured on October 26th will be re-done with an ending date of October 30th.  The company issued the statement and blames technological problems relating to daylight savings time rules and server settings for auctions closing AFTER the closing times.

Typically, when auctions are re-ran, it is because server loads have caused interruptions preventing users from being able to bid.  In this case it looks like the auctions went too long and more bids may have come in after the hammer fell.

Daylight-savings time ends on November 2nd, so it is unclear how this problem may have affected the auctions on October 26th.  According to the email, customers who won domains at auction will have those names taken back, refunds given and the names auctioned again.

The full email sent to email customers follows after the jump.

Dear NameJet Client:
Due to a server time issue related to daylight savings rules, a few auctions on October 26th were closed after the published closing time.  If you are receiving this email, you were a participant in one or more of these auctions which allowed bidding to occur an hour after it was scheduled to have closed.

All of the affected auctions will be restarted.  If you were the winner, credit will be issued for all auctions that have already been billed, and the domains will be removed from your account with the sponsoring registrar.

We will restart the auctions with a close date of October 30th (times will be listed on each auction). These will be added to your list of Auctions within the next 24 hours.  All bids and proxy amounts will be carried over from the time the auction should have closed.  You can then review the auctions and adjust your bid as necessary.  All auctions will be restarted as “private” auctions and only the previous bidders may participate.

We apologize for this situation and assure you it has been corrected.

Daylight-savings time ends on November 2nd, so it is unclear how this problem may have affected the auctions on October 26th.?? According to the email, customers who won domains at auction will have those names taken back, refunds given and the names auctioned again.

The full email sent to email customers follows after the jump.

Dear NameJet Client:
Due to a server time issue related to daylight savings rules, a few auctions on October 26th were closed after the published closing??time.?? If you are receiving this email, you were??a participant??in one or more of these auctions which allowed bidding to occur an hour after it??was scheduled to??have closed.

All of the affected auctions will be restarted. ??If you were the winner, credit will be issued for all auctions that have already been billed, and the domains will be removed from your account with the sponsoring registrar.

We will restart the auctions with a??close date of October 30th (times will be listed on each auction). These will be added to your list of Auctions within the next 24 hours.?? All bids and proxy amounts will be carried over from the time the auction should have closed.?? You can then review the auctions and??adjust your bid as necessary.????All auctions??will be restarted as ???private??? auctions??and only the previous bidders may participate.

We apologize for this situation and assure you it has been corrected.
