.OM Registry Consulting Contract Awarded

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Qinetics, a registry solution provider in Malaysia, announced on Sunday that they have been awarded the contract to manage as consultants to develop policy and procedures for the .OM ccTLD for the country of Oman.  The entire company press release can be read at the end of the post.

The ccTLD .OM is one of three highly desirable ccTLDs because of the typo traffic that spills over to these extension by way of internet users leaving off a letter when typing the popular GTLD .COM.  The traffic that would come to any domain with this extension by mistake could be sent to a search engine landing page. For example, say a registrant were to purchase the domain name Facebook.om.  From the sheer volume of traffic that Facebook.com receives, it is natural that thousands of users will leave off the “C” in .com every day and it can be assumed many of those users will click or search on whatever page they land on.

Other ccTLDs that benefit from this .COM typo leak include .CO and .CM.  Columbia controls the .CO extension and does not currently have .CO domain names wild-carding. The second extension is .CM which is the ccTLD for the country of Cameroon.  The success behind the wild-carding of that countries traffic was talked about in a Business2.0 article about Kevin Ham.  Ham stated that the traffic through that channel was “in the ballpark” of 8 million unique visitors per month.

Since that article, many of the most popular .CM domain names have apparently switched ownership or have been diverted from the original Agoga.com lander.  Domains such as facebook.cm and yahoo.cm go to a viralvideos.org lander.  CNN.cm or ABC.cm goes to a domainsponsor lander and Google.cm goes to an Eharmony landing page.  It can be assumed that these other players jumped in after reading the story.   As John Berryhill put it, “As soon as it started happening, there was a huge sense of ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’”

It isn’t clear from this announcement whether the operators of the .OM registry will open up registrations to non-residents, auction domain names, or even operate a wild-carding similar to the .CM registry operations. What is clear is that this registry operation will have a host of people knocking on their door soon including many attorneys.

Good luck Qinetics. Good luck domainers.

Vancouver Power Outage Walloping Some Domain Owners

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Vancouver Downtown FireA power outage in Vancouver is taking a huge hit on some in the domain industry today. Domain Name News noticed that Name Administration parking sites were not resolving earlier today at around 1pm CST. The many domains owned by the company such as ceilingfans.com and personalloans.com were still unreachable at the time of this writing.

Hitfarm.com, a company based in Vancouver, also appear to be effected by this outage. Although, it appears that the company has found an alternative source to redirect domains. Hitfarm pages now seem to have switched all off of the companies internally run landing pages and are coming up with a Domain Sponsor landing page. It’s good to see a company proactive about emergency situations like this. Many large scale operations would be hit hard by an extended outage such as this one.

Name Administration and many large sites in the Vancouver area use Internet provider Peer 1. Early today when we noticed the pages down, our technical staff traced back the outage to Peer 1. In checking out the company site and their forums they are reporting the following :

1) The fire started at 9am in an underground vault on Richards Street. BC Hydro would not let VFD in to extinguish the fire for 2 hours as they were hoping it would burn itself out. It did not so VFD sprayed water into the vault to extinguish.

2) The vault is now full of water and they will not be able to even begin repairs for 6 to 8 hours from now.

3) BC Hydro will attempt to put some parts of downtown on alternative transformers. They do now know which parts will be put back online as of yet. The main priority for them is getting traffic lights operational for rush hour.

Reinvent Beta Test Vancouver.com

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Domain Name News received a tip-off that Vancouver.com has been relaunched in a beta state by Reinvent. The company purchased Vancouver.com in September of 2007 and has obviously been hard at developing this top notch geo domain name.

The site has features that most users would be accustomed to finding at a geocentric website such as hotel reservations, restaurants, events and real estate. However there is one feature on Vancouver.com that really stood out to me, the City Tour section. This area features an animation of the world that quickly zooms in to a 3-D rendering of downtown Vancouver. The user can zoom in on specific buildings and when highlighted some of the building contain a textual description. As this is a beta version of the site, it still seems rough around the edges but I see a ton of potential in a slick interactive map like this.

Interestingly, there was also a poll on the this page which asks users what they think of the site. The results didn’t seem to convey that the users were getting what they were seeking since 44% of over 1300 respondents said the site “needs more work” . I guess the Beta version needs some tweaking but overall it is a very good start from our view.

What do you think about the new Vancouver.com BETA?

  • 17% Good, but it’s a little slow 228
  • 14% I like it! 190
  • 10% It’s cool, excited for what is coming 136
  • 9% It’s great! This is useful! 131
  • 3% Ok, but it’s not easy to use 40
  • 44% This needs more work 589
Total Votes: 1324

Domainer Earnings Topping the Charts

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Paula Mooney has a  “List of Bloggers Salaries (and Webmasters, Affiliate Marketers, Content Scrapers, Domainers and any other title you can think of)” . It’s unclear why she decided to add domainers to this list (other than for linkbait ) but domainers Kevin Ham and Frank Schilling dominate the top 2 positions.

We’d venture to guess that many other domainers could easily unseat the other positions on her list, but most domainers remain guarded and private in their businesses. For example, Jay Westerdal’s published his controversial post Millionaire Domainers last summer and within minutes, dozens of names were requested to be removed from the list.

Caught this oldie but goodie post thanks to our friend Donna at DomainBoardroom.com

Vancouver’s Internet Millionaires

Monday, March 10th, 2008

The Vancouver Daily Province recently featured three local Internet millionaires, including Kevin Ham, in a cover story. Ham’s company controls 300,000 domain names worth an estimated $300 million.

Ham didn’t respond to requests for an interview, but you’ll definitely be inspired by the way these individuals have gone out and made millions through hard work, an internet connection, and a whole lot of creativity.

2007 The Year In Domain Name News

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

June 2007 marked the debut of Domain Name News. So although we were not able to cover all the stories of 2007, we decided to put together our first annual recap of the past year in domain name news. What would you say the big stories in 2007 were? What news changed the space or made an impact ? We talked with a few dozen friends and associates active in the domain space to help solidify our ideas. What we found was that most of the top stories we had begun writing about were the same ones that resonated with them in recapping the year. Their help was much appreciated in solidifying our ideas. You all know who you are are, thanks for the help! Happy New Year and enjoy our “Year in Domain Name News
