Moniker launches DomainMaxLock

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

According to a press release going out tomorrow, Oversee.net’s public registrar Moniker has launched the DomainMaxLock Service. The new domain locking service is now available at an introductory rate of $34.99 per Domain Name Year which will later increase to $59.95.

The security measures put in place on a “MaxLock” domain are:

  • Provide a government I.D. number for verification of your identity.
  • Set-up custom security questions and answers, further safeguarding your domain assets.
  • Provide special verification instructions and artifacts to ensure that your unique business or ownership interests are protected.
  • When you request that your domains be unlocked, our security team works directly with you to verify all of the above off-line.

This is most likely just the start of a new suite of security related services we will be seeing in the Domain Name Market. Fabulous introduced additional security questions in addition to their “Executive Lock” and GoDaddy filed a patent for a system that automatically rejects domain transfers and launched their Deadbolt Transfer Protection for an annual fee of $24.99.

TRAFFIC Auction providers publish their complete auction lists

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

All auction providers for the Targeted TRAFFIC have now released their auction lists complete with prices.

Sedo will also be ending their GreatDomains auction during the conference on September 25th, 2008, but is not one of the live auction providers at the conference.

The Moniker auction features our advertiser’s premium domain names at No Reserve: Cleaning.com, Sax.com, Trumpet.com, Clarinet.com and MusicStudio.com.

Disclaimer : SnapNames/Moniker parent company Oversee.net is an advertiser on DNN.  The owner of the domains Cleaning.com, Sax.com, Trumpet.com, Clarinet.com and MusicStudio.com is also an advertiser on DNN.   Writer Adam Strong consults with DomainConsultant.com, a company that assists Aftermarket.com with auction strategies.

TRAFFIC Down Under Plans Multiple Auctions

Friday, September 19th, 2008

According to the TRAFFIC Down Under agenda, the Aussie event will be incorporating a multiple auction format similar to the TRAFFIC Brooklyn event. Aftermarket.com and Rick Latona will have auctions at the event on November 20th.  Aftermarket.com is the “premier” auction with a 2 hour time slot followed shortly after by Rick Latona with a 1 hour time slot.  There’s no mention of a Moniker/SnapNames auction in the agenda or on the site.

Multiple TRAFFIC Domain Auction Lists Released

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

With the auctions at TRAFFIC only a week away, much of the domain industry waits with bated breath for the release of the lists of domains to be auctioned at each of these events.  The lists are the first thing everyone starts talking about. It’s what gets the buzz going.  That turns in to a discussion on prices and how the acutions are run.  Based on these first looks at the 2 lists released so far this week and an exclusive sneek peek at the one list that hasn’t been released, this combination of auctions has the makings of a pretty amazing event. It’s a smorgasbord of domains, if you will.  DNN gives you the details about each of the three auction offerings from Moniker/SnapNames, Rick Latona and Aftermarket.com

Moniker/SnapNames
The Moniker/SnapNames team released their preliminary lists of domains (excel) last week. It’s a stout list filled with over 2400 domains in a variety of price ranges, many of which will likely end up in the silent auction.  As is customary with Moniker auctions, the reserves aren’t specifed, rather they are put in to price ranges. There’s some good domains at No Reserve including Cleaning.com, Sax.com, Trumpet.com, Clarinet.com and MusicStudio.com.  It’s quite bold to put some really good domains like Cleaning.com at a No Reserve price.  Hopefully the owner does some cleaning up of his own on that auction.

Typically the names on the Moniker list are pre-sorted and identify which are going to be in the live event and which will go in to the silent auction. With the current list however, it is unclear exactly which of these names will be put in the live auction.

Moniker has the “main event” auction on Thursday night which alots for a 2 1/2 hour auction. In addition, Moniker will also be conducting an auction Tuesday night at the start of the show that features many of Rick Schwartz’s own domain names.  Register to bid online at SnapNames.com

Rick Latona Auctions
In addition to a total redesign of his site Rick Latona announced his full list of domains today. Latona’s auction is also officially open for business as he has also started accepting bids on the domains. Users can go to Proxibid.com/RickLatona and register to bid online.

Latona’s current list consists of 75 domains including domains like SanJuan.com, MCC.com (a “historic domain” registered way back in 1985), GolfClubs.com and Wines.net. The domain list has good descriptions and information provided on each domain, but doesn’t currently contain pricing information, so it is unclear what sort of reserves these domains will have.

A unique concept that Latona has included in his auctions is the addition of a mini-site developed by his company AEIOU.com. Domainers with no development knowledge can get a jump-start on developing their new asset by buying one of these “pre-made” sites.

Latona’s auction will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 EST, and he has an aloted time of 1 1/2 hours.

Aftermarket.com
Finally, there’s Aftermarket.com, the new aftermarket company led by the combined efforts of Domain Tools and TrafficZ.  Obviously, Domain Tools has the experience of running auctions at Domain Roundtable events, but this team has changed the user interface and software completely according to their announcements.

There’s no “official” list released yet from the Aftermarket.com team, but after pushing I’ve been leaked a preliminary list of some of the names that have made the cut.  Here’s a sampling : Openings.com, Palermo.com, KidFlicks.com, TravelDirectory.com, HospitalClothes.com, PeepHole.com, RearEnd.com and the package of Husband.com and Wife.com.  The final list from Aftermarket.com is expected to be released by the end of the week.

Aftermarket.com will also have a 1 1/2 hour time slot on Wednesday at 5 pm EST.

With all the domains available, an investor should likely find some picks of more than one name and spread their interest across all the different auctions.  The early auctions have the potential to deplete budgets if the names are priced right, but smart investors should also keep an eye on bargains in the later auctions as well as the silent auctions that follow the live events.

If you are looking to buy some domains, it’s time to start weeding through these lists and making some picks.  It’s also time to call DomainCapital.com and get your financing squared away.   Hopefully by the end of the week, we’ll start to see some more details so budget conscious domain investors can really begin to really refine their lists.

This should prove to be a very interesting three days of auctions.

SnapNames/Moniker auction hit by Human Error again

Friday, August 29th, 2008

In the Silent Domain auction for the SES conference, which originally was supposed to end yesterday, the domain “iq.net” was re-listed accidentally, even though it had originally been reported as sold at the Internext for $17,000.00. Participants in the auction were informed about the problem via email a few hours before bidding ended. Recently Moniker/Snapnames had accidentally listed and sold a .com version of a domain instead of the .net version. Read all the details after the jump.

The first email from Moniker stated:

I regret to inform you that we have an issue with this domain and it will need to be removed from auction. We appreciate the bid but we will have to cancel this auction and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I will email you when the auction is removed and you are not responsible for purchasing the domain.

In a second email Moniker provided some additional information about the cause of the removal:

[…] It sold at the Internext Live Auction and this appears to be the problem. They [sic] system didn’t recognize this sale at the beginning of the month as all the rest were removed from availability. Apparently this domain was the only Live Sale at Internext that was also positioned for the SES auction. Similar instances were dealing with Internext Extended auctions that were sold and positioned for the SES auction, thus they were removed when sold.

Again, I’m still trying to get to the bottom of the issue but this appears to be the logical explanation. Also checking to see if this bug is affecting any other domains.

SnapNames has promised us an official statement about this incident after their investigation completes.

In addition the SnapNames auction site was hit by another downtime just as the silent auction for the SES domains was concluding. According to Snapnames, the silent auction was completed before the downtime.

[Thanks to NameWise & Stefan/Adblogger (German) for bringing this to our attention]
