Why AdSense for Domains is a Step in the Wrong Direction

Friday, December 12th, 2008

I mentioned in my last editorial, “The Evolution of Domain Parking and Mini Sites” that domain parking will gradually transition to feature rich mini-site development. Google recently announced the public launch of it’s AdSense for Domains program. As with all things Google, it is getting alot of buzz in the industry.

Will AdSense for Domains be worth your time? Let’s take a look at some of the benefits and shortcomings of Google AdSense for Domains.

What are the benefits of AdSense for Domains?

 • Higher Conversions - There have been case studies and numerous reports on conversion rates for simple domain parking pages. Direct navigation (typing a domain into an address bar) has proven to be highly targeted traffic.
 • Possibly Higher Revenue - This may turn out to be the opposite as Andrew of DNW points out here, Google has contracts for the advertising feeds it provides to parking companies. It is within Google’s power to “dial back” or reduce revenue shares for both parking companies and new AdSense for Domains users.

What is AdSense for Domains lacking?

 • Search Indexing - Obviously Google is not going to index any domain enrolled in this program, a major drawback to anyone interested in driving more traffic and increasing site value.
 • Domain Sales Contact - As far as I am aware there is no option to notify visitors that your domain may be for sale or how to contact you, please correct me if I am wrong.
 • Unique Landing Page Design - Google is good at simplicity. Pages may convert but won’t look good.
 • Unique Keyword Rich Content - It is impossible to add any custom content whatsoever to your domains.
 • Alternate Revenue - There will be no option to include affiliate links, products or leads of any kind.
 • Customization - No real way to fix any of the above.

These are huge features that benefit domainers by increasing the short and long term value of your domain name properties.

Google’s AdSense for Domains is simply boring domain parking for the general public repackaged and sold direct from the provider. They are taking a step backwards in the evolution of domain parking.

Don’t worry about activating your AdSense for Domains account, it will probably just disappoint and waste your time. However, I must admit I will be interested to hear about initial conversion rates and revenue earnings per click.

What’s a Better Alternative?

Soon I will be announcing an amazing new product/service for domainers that will allow you to almost instantly develop full mini-sites with unique content and multiple revenue streams including Google AdSense direct from Google! There are many other great features I can’t wait to share. I am currently in beta testing and will have a full review completed when the product officially goes live.

What are your thoughts on Google AdSense for Domains versus automated mini-sites or more advanced domain parking? Please comment.

Facebook’s Lexicon Keyword Tool to Get Some Great Updates

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

You heard about the launch of Facebook’s Lexicon first here on DotSauce in April. This keyword tool tracks the popularity of words used in comments on Facebook friend profiles.

Some big news for Lexicon has recently been announced at the Inside Facebook blog. It seems Lexicon is getting updated! Some powerful and practical new features can be previewed right now and are slated to go live soon.

How Can a Domainer or Developer Use Lexicon?

I can’t wait for the official update to go live so that I can dive in to some keyword research and do some trend domaining. I’m always on the lookout for interesting new keyword tools to use for finding available domains.

Discover ideas for new business or untapped niches all from what 7 million Facebook users are saying TODAY!

These types of tools can also be used to improve your website. By allowing you to explore your main keywords and discover associated keywords, long-tail keywords and negative keywords that you don’t want to be related to. This, in turn, allows you to develop more content and rank higher for a broader set of keyword terms.

Read our article “Facebook: Social Domaining” for a great resource about Domaining related Facebook groups and apps.

If you would like to connect with me on Facebook, visit my profile.
Show your support by joining the DotSauce Fan Page.

Preview the New Lexicon Features

The new version of Lexicon adds a number of new metrics. The preview version is limited to searches on 17 pre-selected terms, but offers a glimpse at what is coming.

 • Actual numbers, instead of just relative volume. Now, you can see how many wall posts are actually being written containing the given term.
 • Demographic breakdowns, by gender and age
 • Geographic breakdowns, by US state, Canadian province, or UK country (no data is available outside of these 3 countries yet). You can also do comparisons between two terms on the same map.
 • Sentiment over time. Facebook has not said exactly how it determines this measure. You can also compare sentiment between two terms.
 • Associations. You can see terms frequently mentioned alongside a given term.

Live Video of Woopra Website Analytics During a Digg Front Page

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Woopra, a website analytics application currently in Beta testing, is gaining popularity very quickly. Instead of the traditional web based statistics, charts and graphs that you will find in services such as Google Analytics, Woopra is installed onto your PC. Many feel Woopra’s best feature is the “Live” view, where website owners can watch visitors as they enter, navigate around the site and follow external links.

Here is a previously-recorded live video stream of Woopra in full-force! GeekBrief.TV recently announced that an app has been created to copy and paste on your iPhone. Big news in gadget world and Digg.com went wild about it, pushing it to the homepage with a huge number of diggs.

Woopra Live Stats as GeekBrief.TV Hits Digg Front Page

The Woopra software application is being hailed as a beautiful and innovative live representation of website statistics and I whole-heartedly agree. Allowing me to see how visitors navigate, track daily performance for uniques, page views, search queries and referrers.

Get Woopra Analytics For Your Website!

DotSauce has been part of the Woopra beta test for several months now, secretly watching your every move as you browse around the site! It has been an enjoyable experience and I highly recommend signing up for the beta test.

Follow these steps to get approved:

 • Register for a free account at Woopra.
 • Add a website URL through your account manager.
 • Wait. Woopra admins are known to do a batch beta tester approval once per month.
 • Post on their forums, they may take notice of you!

It took DotSauce several weeks to get approved, so don’t get dismayed!

What analytics program do you currently use and how do you think it compares with Woopra? Would love to hear your comments, thanks!

Other Cool Interactive Magazines

While I’m on the topic, I feel compelled to share this find. I stumbled on to MagWerk’s quite awhile back (so the content might be a little outdated) but their digital interactive magazines are still very innovative.

MagWerk’s has published (virtually) a line of high quality web zines posing as real flip page magazines. Currently featuring a magazine on each of the following: Music, Gaming, Art & Design, Art & Fashion.

magwerks.jpg

These magazines are, in certain sections, very interactive and media rich with things such as sound clips and music while you read, animation, in-page link structures, pagination within pages , interactive graphics on mouse-over and click, live voting polls, embedded videos and who knows what else. Personally, I haven’t even read but a few pages from each magazine, so I assume there are much more surprises in the form of articles, reviews and more.

Enjoy these 4 high quality virtual magazines, we can only hope that all magazine publishers would someday try their hand and something as interactive and media rich as this!
