Domainer Essentials: Domain Name Filter Software

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Domain Name Filter is a simple and free piece of software that really comes in handy when doing domain research.  This is especially helpful for data mining through lists of thousands of expired domains, available domains or even filtering your own portfolio of domains.

Essentially the software allows you to instantly filter and remove names from a list that contain characters you don’t want.  For example if you wanted to remove all domains that contain hyphens or numbers, you simply type in those characters in the filter setup as this screenshot below shows.

dnfliter-shot.jpg

You can also remove all domains that have extensions you don’t want, filter domains that only have certain keywords, remove domains that are too long, etc.

Overall, Domain Name Filter is an extremely light weight and useful tool for domainers and is worth the free download to test it out.

Previously featured domainer essentials: DNCleaner and Registrant Alert.

Take Twitter to the Next Level with Hummingbird

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

I feel as if our industry is closed off from the public, like we are talking in a small circle when we should be spreading the good word of Domaining to a much wider audience. It may be like this for many industries.

hummingbird.pngI believe, through Twitter, that we can massively expand our industry and increase awareness of the true value and profitability of Domaining, all while making more money and driving traffic to our websites.

We can reach out and network with SEO and search marketers, web developers, freelancers, graphic designers, branding experts and many more people who should be involved with Domaining!

I currently have gained over 5000 targeted followers on Twitter, largely in part to using advanced automation software called Hummingbird.

If used properly (see Tips below), it is completely within the Twitter terms of service and it is an extremely effective way to market yourself to literally thousands of people interested in what you’re doing.

If we all can reach out to these new people and get them reading domain news, watching domain auctions, reading our tips, etc., then the industry as a whole will benefit greatly!

Just What Does Hummingbird Do?

Hummingbird is a powerful, yet simple desktop software program that automates the task of following large groups of targeted Twitter users.

You’ve probably found a list of people you like before and understand how long it takes and how boring it is to click “Follow” so many times.

This premium software is currently only $197 and is working brilliantly.

I have come across some information on official forums that a new version with enhanced features is coming soon and the price will increase significantly.  Current owners will get this update for free.

You can purchase and download Hummingbird here.  I recommend you buy it now before the price goes up with the new update, but even then it’s well worth it and you can earn your investment back fast.

Tips On Getting Started With Hummingbird

Many people are using Hummingbird to amass broad groups of tens of thousands followers. I don’t recommend this method, as it can get your profile suspended and you simply won’t connect with your followers.

What you want to do first is find authority profiles and follow their followers, it’s that simple!  This is the basis for success on Twitter and gaining thousands of followers in a relatively short time.

You can even start with my 5000+ followers (of course not all at once)! My followers are in some way interested in web development, domain names, SEO, marketing and/or web design. If you Tweet about those things, there is a good chance they will follow you back!

Simply navigate to http://twitter.com/DotSauce, click my followers number and Hummingbird can go to work for you.

If you’re in another industry, search for people in your niche and you will soon find plenty of targeted people to follow.

Wait a few days between each follow session to give people time to check you out, then you can have Hummingbird un-follow those who didn’t follow you back. The software even stores a list of every person you un-follow so that you don’t bother them again.

If you have any questions about the Hummingbird software please let me know, would be happy to help get you started.

Domainer Essentials: Domain Name List Cleaner

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Following up my first “Domainer Essentials” post on Registrant Alert by DomainTools, I thought I would continue to share another simple application that I keep handy in my domainer toolbox.

Here it is… DNCleaner.com, a free web based application by SecondVersion that allows you to filter a sloppy list of text and extract all the domain names found within that text.

This tool is very nice for removing duplicate domains also!

dncleaner-before.gif

dncleaner-after.gif

Tip: If you are pasting in lists of domains from your registrar control panel be sure to look closely at the list afterward as you might have accidentally pasted in some DNS server domains or names like GoDaddy.com that accidentally made their way into the list.

Currently DNCleaner only supports the following TLDs: com, net, org, biz, info, us, co.uk, in, co.in, sc, tv, & cc.

Enjoy and feel free to suggest any other essential tools you use as a domainer in the comments below!

Domainer Essentials: Registrant Alert by DomainTools

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

I’ve been using Registrant Alerts by DomainTools for nearly two years and am sorry for not having shared it with you sooner!  It really is an essential tool that automates the otherwise complicated task of digging through WHOIS pages.

domaintools.pngRegistrant Alerts notifies you whenever a change is detected on any of your domain records.

This is normally a paid service, but here’s a little pro tip…

Sign up for a free account at DomainTools and then navigate to the Registrant Alert page, they offer a free registrant alert for one of your own email addresses!

If you use the same email address as the contact for each of your domain registrations, like most others, then the one free alert is all you really need.

Here are some screenshots of what the alerts look like…

registrant-alert-ss.png

registrant-alert-ss2.png

After you confirm your email address with Registrant Alerts, you will begin receiving these email notices any time you register new domain names, when your domain names expire or domains transfer ownership.

It’s basically a WHOIS watchdog service.  The information is simple, but good to know in a timely manner.

Enjoy and feel free to suggest any other essential tools you use as a domainer in the comments below!

Cross Promote Your Domain & Website Sales on the DotSauce Marketplace

Friday, March 27th, 2009

We have added the option to create a classified style advertisement for any listing in the DotSauce Marketplace.  Additionally 3 new marketplace categories have been added that we feel will be beneficial for domainers and developers.

Cross Promote Your Current Domain & Website Sales

When submitting a listing to the marketplace choose a category and then select “Classified” as your listing type.  This will allow you to bypass the built-in PayPal payments system.

Simply tell us a little about your domain or website for sale and provide a direct link to your current auction or official aftermarket listing.

Extra Exposure, More Bidders & Maybe That End User You’ve Been Waiting For

Here’s an example… Say you have a live domain auction coming up for sale on Bido, Sedo, Afternic, SnapNames, SitePoint, etc. and you want some extra exposure, more bidders and possibly an end user to come along.

Submit a listing in the Domains - Auctions category with a Classified listing type.  Include a link to your live auction and your golden.

If your domain is of high quality we may also promote your DotSauce marketplace listing to hundreds of domainers on Twitter, through our email newsletters, over 1000 community members and to the 1000+ unique visitors DotSauce attracts every day.

3 Great New Marketplace Categories

Services - Advertise your web services here.  Such as web hosting, scripting, SEO, marketing, consulting, etc.

Domains Wanted - Request a specific type of domain name that you would be interested in purchasing.

Industry Job Listings - Hiring? Post job positions available in the domain name, development or design industry.

Get Started Selling on the DotSauce Marketplace!

It’s easy to start selling your domains, websites and services on the DotSauce Marketplace.

For more details about the great features our marketplace provides please read our grand opening announcement.

Mini Site Development Services: Creating Small Websites Based on Big Ideas

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Mini site development has the potential to increase revenue and pay-per-click (PPC) conversions on domain names with traffic, especially those with natural type-in visitors.

Mini sites also allow you freedoms and features that current parking companies simply can’t and won’t provide you. If you have a domain with strong keywords there is also the possibility of ranking high in Google and increasing traffic significantly in due time.

Ron Jackson at DNJournal has recently published the DNJournal March Cover Story featuring an introduction to the rise of mini site development lately and list of other mini site development companies.

Each company is unique and has different features, models and methods to their developing madness.

Some are automated like WhyPark or Parking Revolution which places more interaction and content control with the user, others are on the pricey side but provide a hands on experience with true custom content, graphic and promotional work.

DN Media has announced today the launch of MiniSites.com. The new company provides mini site development services to domainers, which is as mentioned above, a hot trend in recent years for those seeking an alternative to falling revenue from traditional PPC parking companies.

minisites.jpg

MiniSites.com has three different mini site development packages to choose from which include features and services such as the following…

  • Dedicated Project Manager
  • Unique Content Creation
  • Custom Text Logo Design
  • Attractive Graphic Header Design
  • Flexible Monetization Options
  • Targeted Keyword Research
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Easily Add Your Own Content Post-Launch
  • Free Hosting for as Long as You Own the Domain

Looks like a great all around package for having someone develop a quick mini site for your domain name.  The base price is set at $120, but they do have discounts for bulk orders.

Surprisingly, the service price nearly triples from $120 to $350 when you want to add on advanced link building and advanced monetization packages.

No details are to be found on the company site regarding hosting or a user control panel. But, I think they are on the right track and I am sure more information will show up soon on MiniSites.com as they push through the new launch.

Would love to hear your comments about mini site development or MiniSites.com, please leave one below!

15 Highly Recommended Apps for Twitter Web Professionals

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Tweet Management is probably the most important aspect of using twitter. We all know that once you begin to follow a lot of people things can get hay-wire.  These applications help you manage your tweets and keep up with your followers efficiently.

  • Tweet Deck is an essential application used for keeping updated and keeping active on Twitter.  Download it and start creating “Groups.” as soon as you can.  These groups can be defined for anything such as “Domainers” or “Designers” and will display updates from only a select few of your followers.  This is just the tip of the iceberg for TweetDeck features.
  • Split Tweet features the ability to manage your multiple Twitter accounts and monitor your company brand.  An excellent web interface allows you to view and send tweets from all of your twitter accounts.  I use it to manage @DotSauce @AQDN @DNMarket @TweetSocial all at the same time with no hassles.
  • Group Tweet is not for everyone, but can be used for allowing multiple people to post updates to a common group Twitter account.  Simply create a new account for whatever group you might have and connect it with Group Tweet.  Example: @DNMarket
  • Future Tweets as you can probably guess, allows you to store tweets to be posted automatically at a later date.  Great when you can’t manage to Tweet a certain day, you can have some stored.  Also good for repeating important tweets on a schedule.
  • Twitter Search is the entire twitterverse at your fingertips. Especially important to use if you’re not using TweetDeck.  Use advanced searches to find the latest news and updates as they happen, find people with similar interests, follow hash tags and most importantly keep track of people who mention your name.

Friends and Followers can be tough to manage and sometimes overwhelming.  These great apps will help you manage new and old followers and keep your audience growing.

  • Twitoria helps you find people you are following that have not updated in a long time.  Sometimes its beneficial to clean your following list of people who are inactive.
  • Friend Or Follow is an excellent tool that quickly shows you who you are following but is not following back and vice versa people following you that you are not following.  This can be an alternative to getting massive amounts of email alerts for new followers.
  • Twimailer is a new service that replaces the generic”New Follower” email Twitter automatically sends you with an enhanced email message featuring the new followers description, URL and their latest tweets.  Saves time and sanity.
  • Nearby Tweets enhances Twitter with a local people search!  Simply type in your city and a keyword if you like to find people in your area.

Twitter Directories can be an excellent way to find new followers and in turn get followed by lots of people with the same interests as you.  These are the best of the best twitter directories:

  • We Follow (Example: WeFollow.com/tag/domains) is a new but popular directory.  Simply send a tweet to @WeFollow with up to three hash tags like #seo #blogger #domains etc.
  • Twellow is the self proclaimed Twitter Yellow Pages, featuring an index of over 2 million Twitter profiles.  Sign up to be able to edit your Twellow profile, connect it with other social networks and choose what categories your profile is featured in.

Blog or Website Enhancements let you connect your website with Twitter which encourage your website visitors and blog readers to connect and engage with you on Twitter.

  • Twitter Tools is the most widely used WordPress plugin for including your Twitter stream into your WordPress powered website and more importantly this plugin sends a Twitter update anytime you write a new post.
  • WP Greet Box is another essential plugin which can display a customized message to a visitor based on what website they came from.  So, if a person finds your website from Twitter you can display a short message thanking them and encouraging a ReTweet or a follow.
  • TweetBacks, by WordPress guru Joost de Valk, brings more interactivity to your articles by feeding Twitter responses right to the comments area of each of your posts.

Twitter Forum Community would be good for discussing the latest news about our favorite service, Twitter.

  • The Twitter Forum at TweetSocial is a new Twitter community project of mine.  Go beyond 140 character discussions with open topics about Twitter apps, Twitter tips, news, marketing, resources and more.

PHPLinkDirectory 3.4 Update - Excellent New Admin Features

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Domainers have always been big fans of phpLD (PHP Link Directory), one of the most popular link directory and article directory scripts available today.  It provides an easy way to develop domain names or add a great new feature to your site (See: DotSauce’s Domaining Directory).

phpLD can help you build traffic and search rankings over time, while providing a great service to users and the potential to earn revenue through paid links and advertisements.

phpLD 3.4 has recently been released for download.  The cost of this script is $30, quite a good deal.  Featured in this update are many enhancements to the admin interface which improve management for sorting and editing submissions and categories.

A much needed improvement has been included which allows you to delete submissions as spam, which in-turn provides a quick way to delete and ban those devious spam link submitters.

The new version also comes with a new phpLD template called “Chrome” shown below:

screenshot.png

While link directories do not gain search engine popularity as quickly as they did a few years ago, they are still a great way to build a niche site or compliment an existing community website.

phpLD has previously been featured by DotSauce in our list of 10 Outstanding & Affordable Scripts for Developing Domains.

If you have purchased before, check out phpLD 3.4 and if you haven’t, consider investing $30 in this great piece of software.

Don’t forget to submit your domaining related website to the DotSauce Domaining Directory!

Domain Name Marketplace on Twitter

Monday, March 9th, 2009

I have just launched a new public domain marketplace on Twitter.  Since many of us in the domain industry have taken a liking to Twitter and are spending a good amount of time there, what better place to advertise your domain names for sale?

dnmarket-twitter.png

@DNMarket will soon feature daily domain sales listings, or classifieds if you will.  Anyone can follow and watch the domain sales updates.

This is how it works for Domain Sellers:

After a few minutes your direct message will be broadcasted to the world on @DNMarket!

Your messages should look something like these…

  • Example.com For Sale, please contact me with offers!
  • Example.com For Sale for $XXX - traffic and revenue!
  • Example.com on Auction now at Sedo! [link]

Your Twitter username will automatically be added to the beginning of your message, so you can leave that out.

What do you think?  Please leave a comment below.
