Patents.com launches

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Patents.com has announced the launch of their international patent search site as part of their platform that includes over 12 million searchable patent documents that can be delivered in three different languages. The company is expected to add 12 more languages soon as they continue to grow the number of patent documents to over 450 million.

Last year, the domain name Patents.com was sold to Internet Real Estate Group for an undisclosed amount of money speculated to be over $1 Million. Following the sale, the Internet Real Estate Group (which is backed by Monster Venture Partners) bought out PatentMonkey’s assets including their search and index capabilities, which are now being used as back-end technology.

Bido.com shuts down for an undetermined period

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Bido.com has shut down for an undetermined time due to technical problems after the site went down twice during the auction for “ForeClosure.com”.

Sahar Sarid wrote on his blog:

We gave it another shot today but still had major tech issues. We believe the right thing to do now is to spend time figuring out the issues and come back when we are ready. It may be few days, weeks, months, none of us really knows.

SolidHost.nl sues Namecheap and eNom

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Solid Host, a popular registrar in the Netherlands, has filed a lawsuit against Namecheap and Demand Media (eNom) for $100,000 after losing their main domain SolidHost.com following a hijack.

This domain hijack was the result of an error at the end of our domain registrar (eNom),” said SH-Andre of the SolidHost Crew on their forums, We suspect they had a security breach on their end, resulting in the fact that the hijacker was able to move our domain away from eNom to another registrar without our authorization. More in-depth information on this subject will be posted shortly.

Oversee.net Article Correction and Apology.

Monday, August 18th, 2008

We have made a correction to the Oversee.net layoff article. The previous article mentioned in the last paragraph “The news of Oversee executives being canned comes in the wake of . . . ”

Domain Name News was made aware of the rumored news of Oversee layoffs on Friday and had received rumors of layoffs at the executive level prior to that. Having basic information and no confirmation yet from verified sources, we wrote the article ahead of the news being released on SocalTech. We mistakenly left in that executives were also released. There has been no confirmation from Oversee that executives were or were not released. According to a report from Ron Jackson at DNJournal no company executives were released.

Our sincere apologies to Oversee for this oversight.

Bido Wants to Fix Domain Parking

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Bido.com, a website launched earlier this year by Sahar Sarid focused on selling 1 domain per day, has announced the creation of a new service called Portfolio Help. Details of the service are fairly vague and emails to company officials by Domain Name News have gone unanswered. However, based on the loose information on Sahar’s blog and Bido.com, the service seems to focus on the “strength in numbers” concept.

By rallying together multiple domain portfolio owners, the company can use that leverage to make greater demands of parking companies. The company aims to fill a need that parking companies may have by aggregating these portfolios. Parking companies that need to ramp up, meet quotas or raise their quality scores will gravitate toward a solution where they might quickly gain traffic. This co-op sort of concept was a focus of Klickerz.com when they first started. Owner Fin Lemonde was very vocal about the need for domainers to rally together to be able to make more money together rather than separately. Klickerz relied heavily on a Skenzo provided feed and had from time to time faced complaints. Other endeavors in aggregating traffic include Moniker’s Traffic Club. Traffic Club was shut down when Oversee bought Moniker.

Big Congratulations to Elliot Silver on His Most Important Development Project

Friday, August 1st, 2008

For all you gold (or should I say Silver) diggers out there, this news is for you. Our good friend and fellow domainer Elliot Silver is going off the market tomorrow (Saturday).  His bride-to-be has already figured out how life is with an entrepreneurial domainer. Elliot interviews her on his site where she explains :

4) EJS: What’s the best thing about marrying a domain investor?

KJA: Cha-ching! Just kidding. I love that you are entrepreneurial and are able to make your own hours. You are dedicated to what you do and I love being a part of this growing business. I also love that you can work anywhere… but…

5) What’s the worst thing about marrying a domain investor?

KJA: The blackberry addiction and non-stop working mentality!!

The happy couple is registered with the .mobi and .tv registry.  ;) Please feel free to push Elliot and Karen as many of those beautiful domains as you can. They love them I hear.

You are a lucky dude to have found someone to put up with your domaining addiction. Congrats Mr. Silver and good luck Karen !  May your love always click and may all of your developments prosper.

Sedo Loses Chief Strategy Officer

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Picture taken by Antony van Couvering at the Sedo Pro 2007 event

After working with Sedo for over six years in various senior roles, Matt Bentley, Sedo’s Chief Strategy Officer, will be leaving the company to pursue other opportunities.

“It has been an incredibly rewarding experience to participate in Sedo’s worldwide growth and witness the company’s emergence as a dominant player in the market,” said Bentley. “I’m definitely going to miss working with the many great people there, but the time was right for me to find a new challenge. Sedo is a strong organization, and I expect to see the company continue to thrive at the forefront of the domain industry.”

Bentley was one of the company’s first dozen employees and has been with Sedo since 2002. He started as the Director of International Operations, helping to expand Sedo’s global reach outside of Germany by launching their U.S. subsidiary company Sedo.com, LLC in 2004. He later served as CEO of Sedo.com for two years before moving back to Germany to serve as the Chief Strategy Officer.

Bentley will transition out of his role effective August 1, 2008, but will remain close to the company as an outside Strategic Advisor.
