Domisfera.com Interviews Rick Schwartz
He wakes up at 5:30 every day, does a little work here and there, eats at fancy restaurants, and owns over 5,300 domains. His name is Rick Schwartz and he is, as you might know him, the “Domain King” and organizer of the Targeted T.R.A.F.F.I.C. show. Domisfera.com was recently given the opportunity to interview Schwartz, prodding into the mind of the master and pulling out some gems.
In the interview, Rick Schwartz described his thoughts on many different domain extensions such as .tv, .mobi, .tel, .es, and, of course, .com. While nothing comes relatively close to the .com in his mind, he believes the second-best option is still up for grabs.
“Time will tell and the MARKET will decide. Not you, not me, not some promoter. The MARKET and that is what so few really understand. It is about READING the market. Anticipating the market. Understanding the market. Not trying to FORCE the market. Things happen when they are ready to happen. Not before, not after. When the MARKET is ready.”
Schwartz has been in the business for a very long time, starting out with $1800 in 1995 and turning it into over $20 million in the next eight years. It was then that he became world famous for being a master of the industry. He realizes what it takes to make it and he respects anybody who is willing to work hard and make it happen.
“I admire any domainer that puts their nose to the grindstone, does this business honestly and knows how to treat other people. We are lucky to have such solid citizens in the industry.”
When asked about whether or not the domain market is overpriced or if it has reached his limit, Schwartz replied by stating that he thinks prices are extremely affordable.
“If I decide to go in the real world and by a piece of property to build a business it will likely cost 7 figures. I can only service a small geographic area and if it fails I am stuck with what I have. It will take a year or two to build after I find a suitable location. Plus I have to pay for garbage collection, insurance, have burglar alarms. Have all types of expenses. With a great domain I have less overhead and a reach around the globe. If it fails I can rebuild something else in a matter of hours or days.”
While there will always be ups and downs, Schwartz has some keen advice: “buy smart and the bad times don’t matter.”
